Short Range Wireless Networks

Course Summary

This course presents the Design, Deployment, Performance Evaluation and Operation of Short-Range Wireless Networks. Participants will understand the Signal Propagation Characteristics, Modulation Techniques, MAC Layer Design and Framing Methods. The Technologies discussed include IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN Standards, IEEE 802.15.1 Bluetooth, WiMedia Alliance High-Rate WPAN and IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee Low-rate WPAN Systems. The course provides a detailed examination of these systems and their associated operations. Comparisons and Security Issues are addressed at the PHY and MAC Layers. Interference issues and Co-existence between various wireless networks are analyzed and solutions for coexistence improvement presented.

SHORT-RANGE RF PROPAGATION
Channel Modeling, Link Budget Design and Path Loss Models, Fading Models, Ray Tracing, Multipath Characteristics and Mitigation, Eavesdropping, Jamming and Security Vulnerabilities.
IEEE 802.15.1 - BLUETOOTH OPERATIONS
Bluetooth Protocol Stack, Basic and EDR Variations, Bluetooth radio, Baseband Operations, Link Management Protocols, Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol, Bluetooth Profiles and Usage Models, HCI, Profile interaction, Qualification.
IEEE 802.15.4 (ZIGBEE) LOW-RATE WPAN OPERATIONS
